Roaring (2024)
Geelong. The 1920s. Secrets, scandal, and the spirit of rebellion.
Roaring— an ambitious, immersive theatrical experience inspired by the vibrant, gritty, and glamorous world of 1920s Geelong. Set at a high society fundraiser, pulsing with live jazz (thanks to The Bellarine Big Band) whispered rumours, and hidden doorways, the show invited audiences to slip between fact and fiction as they pieced together their own path through the night.
Rather than re-enacting history, Roaring captured the spirit of the era — a tribute to the boldness of the past, a reflection on our present, and a provocation for the future. Every detail, from the lighting to the music to the movement of performers in shadowed corners, was designed to evoke a time of upheaval and transformation.
Audiences roamed freely through the space, following characters, overhearing conversations, discovering private letters and scandalous secrets. No two experiences were the same. And that was the point.
A Local Collaboration
Local Voices, Shared Vision
Roaring was created and directed by Echo’s founder Libby Brockman and developed over several years in close collaboration with local Geelong artists. The project brought together actors, writers, dramaturgs, interns, and creatives who shaped the work with generosity, playfulness, and heart.
Special thanks to interns Molly England and Alysha Jane for their incredible energy and creativity, and to dramaturg Rachel Baring for helping shape the foundation of the script. Gratitude also goes to our supporters at Geelong Arts Centre, Creative Victoria, and the generous donors through the Australian Cultural Fund.
